Fresh and clean dental care

Professional Dental Cleaning

Regular visits to the dental hygienist are one of the most important things you can do for your oral health. Even with excellent brushing and flossing, plaque and tartar can build up in areas that are difficult to reach at home, particularly between the teeth and along the gum line.

Our skilled dental hygienists use specialist instruments to gently but thoroughly remove plaque, tartar and surface stains, leaving your teeth feeling fresh and looking their best. Every appointment also includes personalised advice on brushing technique, flossing, interdental cleaning and the best products for your individual needs.

At Fareham Road Surgery, we also offer direct access appointments, meaning you can book to see our hygienist without needing a referral from a dentist first. This is particularly convenient if you simply want a professional clean or have not visited a dentist recently.

Understanding Gum Disease

Gum disease is one of the most common dental conditions in the UK and the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. The good news is that it is largely preventable.

Gingivitis

The earliest stage of gum disease. Gums may appear red, swollen or bleed when you brush or floss. Gingivitis is entirely reversible with professional cleaning and improved oral hygiene at home.

Mild Periodontitis

If gingivitis is left untreated, it can progress to periodontitis. The gums begin to pull away from the teeth, creating pockets where bacteria accumulate. Early bone loss may begin around the affected teeth.

Advanced Periodontitis

In advanced cases, significant bone and tissue loss occurs, and teeth may become loose or drift out of position. Intensive periodontal treatment is needed to stabilise the condition and prevent tooth loss.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

Your hygienist appointment typically lasts around 30 minutes. Our hygienist will begin by assessing the health of your gums, checking for any signs of gum disease, and measuring the depth of the pockets around your teeth.

Using a combination of ultrasonic scaling instruments and hand instruments, they will carefully remove plaque and tartar from above and below the gum line. A polishing paste is then used to remove surface stains and leave your teeth feeling smooth and clean.

Finally, your hygienist will spend time demonstrating the most effective brushing and flossing techniques for your teeth, recommend suitable products, and answer any questions you may have about caring for your mouth at home.

Our Hygiene Recommendations

  • Brush Twice Daily

Use a fluoride toothpaste and a soft or medium bristle brush. Spend at least two minutes each time, paying attention to all surfaces.

  • Clean Between Your Teeth

Use interdental brushes or floss daily. This removes plaque from areas your toothbrush cannot reach -- where most gum disease starts.

  • Visit Your Hygienist Regularly

We recommend a professional clean every three to six months depending on your individual needs. Your dentist or hygienist will advise on the ideal frequency.
