When You Need Urgent Dental Care

Dental emergencies can happen at any time -- a sudden toothache, a knocked-out tooth during sport, or a broken filling over the weekend. At Fareham Road Surgery, we understand how distressing a dental emergency can be, and we do everything we can to see you as quickly as possible.

Our experienced team is equipped to handle a wide range of dental emergencies, from relieving severe pain and treating infections to repairing broken teeth and re-cementing crowns. We keep emergency appointment slots available each day so that we can offer you prompt care when you need it most.

If you are unsure whether your situation counts as a dental emergency, please call us and our team will advise you. It is always better to seek professional advice sooner rather than later -- early treatment often prevents a small problem from becoming much more serious.

What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

  • Severe or persistent toothache
  • A knocked-out (avulsed) tooth
  • A broken, cracked or chipped tooth
  • A lost filling or crown
  • Swelling of the face, gum or jaw
  • Bleeding that will not stop after an extraction
  • A dental abscess (painful swelling with possible fever)
  • Injury to the mouth, lips or tongue

If you are in severe pain, have uncontrolled bleeding or significant facial swelling, and cannot reach us, please attend your nearest A&E department.

What to Do in a Dental Emergency

Here is some first-aid advice while you arrange to see us. Always call the practice for professional guidance.

Knocked-Out Tooth

Pick the tooth up by the crown (the white part), not the root. If it is clean, try to place it back into the socket and bite gently on a clean cloth. If you cannot reinsert it, keep it in milk or saliva and get to us within 30 minutes for the best chance of saving it.

Severe Toothache

Take over-the-counter painkillers such as ibuprofen (if suitable for you) following the packet instructions. Avoid very hot or cold food and drink. Do not place aspirin directly on the gum. Call us as soon as possible to arrange an urgent appointment.

Broken or Chipped Tooth

Rinse your mouth gently with warm water. If there is bleeding, apply gentle pressure with clean gauze. Save any fragments of the tooth if possible. Apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek to reduce swelling and contact us promptly.

Lost Filling or Crown

If a crown has come off, try to slip it back over the tooth temporarily using a small amount of denture adhesive or toothpaste. Do not use superglue. Avoid chewing on the affected side and book an appointment as soon as you can.

When to Call Us

If you are registered with our practice, call us during surgery hours and our reception team will arrange an emergency appointment for you as quickly as possible. If you call outside of surgery hours, our answerphone message will provide you with details of the out-of-hours dental service.

Even if you are not registered with us, we may be able to see you as an emergency patient. Please call to discuss your situation and we will do our best to help.

For life-threatening emergencies -- such as difficulty breathing, heavy uncontrolled bleeding, or trauma involving loss of consciousness -- please call 999 or go directly to A&E.

Out of Hours

If you experience a dental emergency outside of our normal opening hours, please call the practice on 01329 232910 and listen to the recorded message for details of the out-of-hours dental service.

You can also contact NHS 111 by dialling 111 for advice and to be directed to the nearest available emergency dental service.

In the meantime, take over-the-counter painkillers as directed, avoid very hot or cold food, and try not to bite on the affected area.
